Over the last three decades, extensive areas of primary tropical forests rich in biodiversity have been cleared and covered with monoculture palm oil plantations, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia, destroying critical habitat for many endangered species, including orangutans, rhinos, tigers, and elephants.
